AWARD WINNING EXTENSION

LOCATION:

FROGDEN, KELSO

COMPLETION DATE:

July 2013

DETAILS/OVERVIEW:

With the alteration, modernisation and extension of an existing cottage great efforts were taken in the detail design of this extension. Extensive detailing ensured each material, surface and plane is clearly defined and framed. The work was carried out to a high standard by an excellent builder. The building has been transformed into a home for modern living, with high thermal standards whilst still retaining much of the character of the stone cottage. This building has been awarded the Scottish Borders Council Design Award for 2013 in the category of works to an existing building.

NEW HOUSE, KIRK YETHOLMDSCN3381DSCN3378DSCN3376DSCN3399

NEW HOUSE, KIRK YETHOLM

LOCATION:

KIRK YETHOLM KELSO

COMPLETION DATE:

December 2012

DETAILS/OVERVIEW:

This design was kept simple and compact and is both efficient in terms of cost and energy use. The overall plan and detail design follows closely the principles of “passive house” design. The use of an open plan layout at the ground floor for public spaces minimises unusable circulation space. Glazing, predominately to the south, plus glazing to the east and west maximises solar gains whilst reducing losses to the north. With high thermal standards, triple glazed windows and an extremely air tight external envelope this new home requires no central heating. All heating is provided by a centrally located wood burning stove. Heat generated by the stove is evenly distributed throughout the house via a whole house ventilation system with heat recovery.
